Gents' bowling records

T

hirteen Gents members and two guests have cracked this list by taking four or more wickets in an innings. The list is dominated by seam, with Dhruv Patel being the only spinner to have taken five wickets. Even then memory recalls he was bowling seamers for three of his wickets v. Rotherham SC. There is much Ashtonian dominance (even his Hat-Trick had to be a smarty trousers affair off the first three balls of the innings), but Snarler Snelling’s pure pace has brought rich recent reward, including possibly the most bizarre analysis in a Gents game of 8 for 77. Mark’s derring-do against The Cheetahs in 1989 was the best bowling in a Gents game until September 1991 and a club record until June 1994, until he broke it again. What a bowlers’ summer 1996 was can be seen from the dating of three of the top four spells from that year, although the best year yet for the men with the ball in their hand was 1997, in which oppo were skittled on average for 99 miserly runs. Mr Hill’s amazing analysis in 1996 included four wickets in an over, though no Hat-Trick, but did not contain a maiden.

Opponents' bowling records

W

hereas there have been no seven-wicket hauls by oppo bowlers, their list is perhaps more one for the connoisseur, with Stig’s rain-assisted off-spin and Charles Arthur’s interesting leg-cutters well up there with the accurate seam of Ron High and the express pace of Adrian Gathercole and Derek Kirkwood. Charles heads the list with three entries, level with Weasel skipper Derek, who uniquely has taken three Michelles against The Gents.

The most brown-trousering spells of bowling v. GWLCC are possibly the 6 for 28 by Gathercole and the 5 for 35 by Hibbert. The former was an accurate and hostile performance on a deteriorating wicket, but in excellent light, in other words a classic fast bowler’s performance as he shot his side to victory, the latter a nerve-shredding mixture of yorkers, beamers and bouncers in the dark which caused the considerable wrath of Mike Hughes to be incurred, but which nevertheless was also a match-winner. Showing that spin can and does play a major part are not only such tweakers as Stig (being obliged to slow down by the muddy ground) and Mr Arthur but also the redoubtable off-breaks of Bill Flack, Richard Pugh and Pat Crotty, the slow left-armers of Alex Murray and the occasional, terrifyingly unpredictable leggies of Delesh Jeyadevan, whose direction finder is always on the blink but who always takes a pile of wickets. Expect to hear plenty more from FC Chad and Meopham seamer Master Collings, at fourteen the youngest name on the list. Kirky and Gathercole are 9/4 joint favourites to take that elusive seven-wicket haul against The Gents.
