The Gents
20th Anniversary celebration climaxes with a tied game between the Gents and a West London Select side.
Thanks to Mr Burman, Close PF, West XI and all who played for making it a memorable day. Here's to the next 20! |
20 Aug |
Gents are back to winning ways and complete a double against the always competitive
London Saints. Match winner was Scibbo (37 and 3-33) with good support with bat and ball from HP (30), Sanjay (28 and 3-19), Ravi (24) and Ahsan (22).
How the Saints saw it - good luck to Steve Cotton in Aus. |
6 Aug |
A flurry of wickets in Stuart's (4-39) second spell gave us hope but we were eventually overhauled by a strong
West One. Ravi hit a quite marvellous 61 to reach a respectable, but alas not winning, total against a quality attack. |
30 July |
More heartache for the Gents as they narrowly lose a low scoring game against
Battersea Ironsides. Another captains innings from HP (24) in an otherwise disappointing innings. However the bowlers hit
back superbly (Ravi 4-22, debutant Chris Rudd 2-12) but victory was agonisingly denied. |
22 July |
Gents back to winning ways against
Enterprise. Good knocks from Ravi (33), Druv (29 - welcome back), Naveed (25) and Rich (24) in a solid team effort.
Hemin (4-7) took the bowling honours in the Enterprise reply, with Cloete, arguably the best batsman we have faced this season, hitting a very impressive 57. |
17 July |
So near yet so far as
West XI narrowly win to square the BAMC series. Gents stars were Hemin (4-12) and Ahsan 43*. |
8 July |
Gents are beaten by the ever impressive
Old Tenisonians (Paul Kain 49). Stars in the field were debutant Murali (8-3-19-4) and Daoud (an economical 8 overs for 15 runs). In our reply most get a start but fail to push on, HP top scoring with 21. |
2 July |
Our unbeaten record comes crashing down against a vocal
Purley Arms. HP (29) resisted impressively for an understrength Gents against a talented pace and spin attack in a very one sided game. |
24 June |
The Gents edge a tense low scoring game against the
London Rams by 1 wicket. A fine bowling and fielding performance restricted Rams to 71 all out (Snarler 3-11),
but a valiant fightback was not qute enough as Gents collapsed in the face of Neil Patel's 5-11, Ravi's 15 not out seeing us home. Kudos to Rob for a fine unbeaten 50 in the following Pro15. Congratulations also to Richard Gilkes for his 1000th Gents run and West XI's Steve Bignell for reaching the 5000 run landmark. |
23 June |
Last week the Gents won a classic encounter with new oppo Cairns Fudge by 2 wickets off the penultimate ball of the match. Ravi (63) and Scibbo (29) shared a 104 partnership after Horace Hibbert (welcome back) took 5-11.

10 June |
Nabil hits another fine ton (109) supported by Naveed (51) and Jimmy (47) in an impressive batting performance at Chiswick. The Weasels refuse to buckle and see out their overs, although the Gents can be pleased with their bowling and fielding, Scibbo taking 3-16.

3 June |
Gents win a low scoring game at Old Tenisonian's against London Saints. In ideal seam bowling
conditions, Ahsan Iqbal's pacy and accurate spell earns figures of 5-7 including a hat-trick that most of us missed!

20 May |
Gents strike first in the 2008 Bob Aston Memorial Cup with a convincing 83 run victory. Plaudits to Nabil (32 and 5-13),
Naveed (46 and 1-0) and Ravi (28 and 2-3) in an excellent team performance. West's resistance led by Chris Wright with 44. Reports from
The Gents and West XI viewpoints. |

Big thanks to our hosts Sloane Club for their hospitality and a top day out, as Andy Burman
reports. |
6 May |
On an early season 'pudding' the Gents stumble to 123-9 in a timed game against an unambitious Kingston Left Handers who
secure a largely unexciting draw. HP top scores, but sustains a calf injury, SP is the pick of the bowlers.

20 Sept. |
Gents complete the season with a defeat against
Salix. Tony bowled a tight spell, but overall we conceded a few too many runs.
However, a respectable innings - including a spectacular 47 from Lloyd, 24 from Sanjay and a return to form for Rob - leaves
us 29 short. This is how the oppo saw it. |
13 Sept. |
Further disappointment as West XI deservedly win at Berkhamsted to square the series and retain the Bob Ashton Memorial Cup.
Reports from both a Gents and Wests perspective. |
4 Sept. |
A disappointing defeat for the Gents against new oppo
Gubbays at their very pleasant home. Good performances from Snarler, HP and Scibo (welcome back!) are
undermined by a series of unforced errors. |

29 August |
Gents shade an enjoyable 2 innings match against a talented and youthful Wombles amid much
creative and good natured sledging at Old Tenisonians. Thanks to all who took part and contributed food, plus Old Ts for their hospitality. Note that Sunday's
game with Jay Bharat will not take place after they double booked opponents and then helpfully blew us out. Andy is
working to arrange an alternative fixture at short notice. |

21 August |
9 man Gents lose a close game against a rejuvinated London Saints. Fingers crossed for a fine Bank Holiday weekend. |

Gents win both weekend games against Enterprise and the London Owls. Congratulations to
Tony Buck on his 100th Gents wicket. Hemin Patel is ruled out for the season after sustaining a nasty injury on Sunday. |

Some cricket at last and a win in a tough game against 12 Angry Men - report . Best wishes to the great Horace Hibbert, who
was forced to retire from the match due to illness. |

15 July |
A potentially classic clash with West XI was curtailed by a torrential downpour - report . |

10 July |
An eventful weekend. On Saturday, the Gents recorded a record winning margin of 236 runs against New Barbarian Weasels. Nabil again led the
way with an awesome 143 not out, ably supported by Chris Wright (54), Alex (28) and Sanjay (27). Tony took 5 wickets in the Weasels reply, with Stuart bagging 3 in a hostile opening spell.
Sunday's timed game with Old Tenisonians ended in swift defeat after a dramatic Gents collapse, but some pride was restored with an 8 wicket win in a hastily arranged 20-20. Rich, Lloyd and
Nabil made excellent runs following a competitive bowling and fielding performance. Thanks to guests Chris, Steve, Dave, Naveed and Druv. |

1 July |
Today's game was cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch. |
26 June |
NB. Due to a fixture backlog Brondesbury CC are unable to host us on Sunday 1 July. Instead we will be playing Old
Tenisonians at their Motspur Park ground, kick off is 2pm. The wet weather caused last Sunday's game to be cancelled. |

20 June |
We wanted a test and certainly got one. Pak (Ghaffar 45, Maani 31) hit an impressive 172 on
another shocking Fairfield wicket, complete with novelty strip of long grass inside the boundary. Gents reply of 128 (Sanjay 48, Umar 5-30)
featured an array of dismissals to unplayable shooters - Report |
10 June |
Gents (177) defeat New Barbarian Weasels (117-9) by 60 runs in the PALS League.
Nabil (69) and Tony (29) top score for the Gents. Weasels are restricted by a tight spell from Nabil (7-3-14-1) and
Druv's 3-21. Hoskins hits 34* - Report. |
4 June |
Records tumble as Gents post their highest ever score (325-5) in a 141 run win against London Saints (184-9), also the highest aggregate match score. The 3rd wicket partnership of 162 between Nabil (100*) and Paul Kain (87) the highest in Gents history for any wicket. Other significant contributions came from HP (45), Druv (45), Sanjay (5-30) and Hemin (3-27).
Saints respectable reply was helped by 42 from Yogeswaran - Report
and how the oppo saw it. |

Sadly our game at Hale fell victim to the shocking Bank Holiday weather. We hope for better luck next week. Player profiles have been updated. |

20 May |
The Gents (194-7) defeat West XI (79) by 115 runs at Gunnersbury Park.
Strong team performance, with honours going to Nabil (75 & 2-1), Druv (39), Lloyd (27 & 3 outstanding catches), Sanjay (a remarkable 3-0) and
Snarler (2-8). Congratulations to West XI's Steve Bignell (3-47) for passing the 400 wicket milestone for the club.
Neep (26) was West's top scorer - Report. |
6 May |
An excellent start to the season as the Gents (139) beat a sporting Pak (85)
by 54 runs - Report. Good team effort, but outstanding performances from Nabil (39 and 3-10), Hemin (27 and 2-8) and Ed Babar (3-10).
Naveed scored 36no in Pak's reply. |

A negative match reporter,
perhaps the mischievous troublemaker from West XI E Savinalar-Finney, would cite
the fifth defeat in seven games and the presence of five guests, including three
debutants, as profound causes for concern. The result was a fine game, narrowly
if deservedly won by Jay Bharat, a very impressive mix of colts and senior
players.

Even 24 hours later, the
scorecard of this game makes scarcely credible reading. In a game that was a
triumph for the groundsman The Gents, inserted as two Rams had to leave early,
struck their record score, including 31 fours and eight sixes, five from the bat
of Nabil Husain. Jim Wright batted through the innings, though he may not be
said to have carried his bat, as only three wickets fell. In reply, Rams were up
with the rate for a long time, Severn leading the way with a fluent fifty and
the top eight batsmen all reaching double figures, but fell short by 72 runs
after a late tumble of wickets.

A Gents side not helped by late
withdrawals played bravely before collapsing in a dismal heap against
comfortably the best side played this season. But out of darkness cometh light
and in a game both more enjoyable and of far higher quality than the scratchy
affair 24 hours before, there were several Gent performances to cherish, if
ultimately nothing as good as the sublime 72 by Essex league batsman Abdul
Ghaffar which was, within one run, the difference between the teams.

The strongest Sunderland side
to play The Gents since 2001 chased down a below-par score on a patchy wicket,
the individual highlight of the day being six wickets for the wily medium-pace

Gent bowlers bar the captain. It was a curious, unsatisfying game, not helped by
an infestation by the pavilion of Surbiton’s finest, electronic tags and all,
but one deservedly won by the visitors.

Nabil
Husain’s second century, a superb effort with 20 fours and a six compiled in
just 25 overs at the crease, led The Gents to a mammoth total at sunny Elstree.
Cloud then descended, favouring the visitors’ seamers and despite an excellent
second-wicket stand between Griffiths and Berkeley, Saints fell 110 runs short
with 6.3 overs unbowled. This was a very good all round Gents performance
against competitive but, as ever, friendly opposition.
