Having failed to defend 141 in the first game with a mixture of sloppy bowling and fielding, The Gents were pasted for 196 in the second by some brutal batting. It seemed a formality for the visitors, but The Gents attacked the bowling from the word go, were always up with the rate and won the game off the final possible ball with a Palmer four, to huge celebrations and warm handshakes from a tough, sporting oppo.</p> <p>Honours were therefore even as it had been decided by the captains to play two discrete games and not aggregate the scores to find a winner. The latter conventional format has its attractions but if one side gets too far ahead in the first game it can be a long day for the side behind, such spectacular reversals as the 2009 Lord Nelson Cup (West XI 73 and 175-5 beat London Saints 138-8 and 86 by 24 runs) being the exception.</p> <p>On an eventful day, the irrepressible Dhruv Patel, kindly loaned by Kumar to replace the injured Snelling, conspired to be on the winning side in both games, a Close PF fielder stormed off the field in protest at the field being set in the first, while Dave Gimlik on debut for The Gents suffered a golden duck and saw his only over disappear for 23. He is welcome back anytime, for this is not the format to give a chap a gentle introduction into Sunday cricket. Thanks are given to Gents regulars Sumit Kumar and Nilesh Dubey, who brought along a couple of work colleagues and sundry cricketing pals to make up an excellent side who played hard but fair.</p> </h5> <br /> <center><b>Game 1 - Close PF won by 1 wicket</b></center> <br /> </td> </tr> </table> <!-- Batting Side 1 --> <div align="center"> <center> <table style="border-collapse: collapse" id="AutoNumber8" bordercolor="#111111" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="2" width="80%" border="0"> <tbody> <tr> <td class="BattingTeam" colspan="4">Gentlemen of West London</td> </tr> <tr> <td class="BattingTeamHeader2" colspan="2" align="left">Batsman</td> <td class="BattingTeamHeader2" colspan="2" align="right">Runs</td> </tr> <tr> <td class="BatsmanBlue">Snelling</td> <td class="BatsmanOutBlue">&nbsp;</td> <td class="BatsmanOutBowlerBlue">b Nimmit</td> <td class="BatsmanRunsBlue">10</td> </tr> <tr> <td class="BatsmanWhite">Palmer</td> <td class="BatsmanOutWhite">run out</td> <td class="BatsmanOutBowlerWhite">&nbsp;</td> <td class="BatsmanRunsWhite">25</td> </tr> <tr> <td class="BatsmanBlue">H Patel</td> <td class="BatsmanOutBlue">&nbsp;</td> <td class="BatsmanOutBowlerBlue">b Nish</td> <td class="BatsmanRunsBlue">0</td> </tr> <tr> <td class="BatsmanWhite">&#8224;S Desai</td> <td class="BatsmanOutWhite">&nbsp;</td> <td class="BatsmanOutBowlerWhite">b D Patel</td> <td class="BatsmanRunsWhite">41</td> </tr> <tr> <td class="BatsmanBlue">S Patel</td> <td class="BatsmanOutBlue">run out</td> <td class="BatsmanOutBowlerBlue">&nbsp;</td> <td class="BatsmanRunsBlue">3</td> </tr> <tr> <td class="BatsmanWhite">*Gilkes</td> <td class="BatsmanOutWhite">not out</td> <td class="BatsmanOutBowlerWhite">&nbsp;</td> <td class="BatsmanRunsWhite">13</td> </tr> <tr> <td class="BatsmanBlue">Hibbert</td> <td class="BatsmanOutBlue">&nbsp;</td> <td class="BatsmanOutBowlerBlue">b Kumar</td> <td class="BatsmanRunsBlue">18</td> </tr> <tr> <td class="BatsmanWhite">Caveney</td> <td class="BatsmanOutWhite">run out</td> <td class="BatsmanOutBowlerWhite">&nbsp;</td> <td class="BatsmanRunsWhite">0</td> </tr> <tr> <td class="BatsmanWhite" colspan="4">Buck &amp; The calculation was, however, based on a false premise as within a few overs a visiting fielder threw a wobbler about the absence of a third-man and marched off the pitch, requiring Kumar to call his men together for an on-pitch team bollocking. This incident recalled the Jason Irvin/Wayne Thompson Rumble in Victoria Rec against London Rams in 2002. A promising scenario for The Gents was developing after a steady five-an-over start from Snelling and Palmer but the innings got bogged down around the halfway mark. Desai was in good nick for his 41 and caught the eye with Palmer but the overs ran out at 141-7.</p> <p>The Patels, Buck and Snelling applied good early pressure, Caveney and Hemin Patel taking smart catches. With Close PF 35-4 off seven overs it was looking good for the hosts but wayward spells from Gimlik and Hibbert saw runs come at a torrent. The Patels made further inroads (Hemin bowling a model spell, conceding only 17) but Nimit was powerful in his 54*. Hemin smartly ran out Kumar, but luck then completely deserted The Gents when Snelling fell crook with a pulled groin muscle, Gilkes finishing his over and bowling Sudhish with his first ball. No.11 Dhruv Patel took guard with Close PF still needing 14, though they had 3.3 overs to get them. They didn't need all the overs, Dhruv winning the game with two straight drives for four off Sanjay and a simple pushed single. He knew that the second game would be difficult without Snelling, so the kind donation of Dhruv was a Godsend and greatly appreciated, though he did not particularly influence proceedings. Over a superb tea The Gents had time to reflect on the captain's words and certainly looked a side transformed in the first half of the second innings. Hibbert, having correctly decided never to bowl spin again after his aberrant interlude earlier in the afternoon, was accurate and challenging, while the opening spells from the Patels, together with Buck's wobblers and Palmer's pleasing slow left-arm, showed a side who were thinking about their bowling and supporting their captain. Sanjay bowled Omkar, Desai stumped Manish (his fourth such victim of 2010) and Palmer pinned Nimit before he could replicate the damage of the first match.</p> <p>Close PF were 64-3 at the 10 over mark, whereupon their batsmen went bonkers, 132 runs being laced off the final 10 as the lack of bowling depth told. Nobody bowled badly, but Shree and Kew CC batsman Rohit were class acts and played like it. No fewer than 75 runs came in the last five overs, the innings including 23 fours and three sixes. It was the highest Twenty20 score ever made against The Gents and looked a matchwinner. Only once before had The Gents successfully chased a total of more than 200. That legendary game against 12 Angry Men ten years ago (Gents made 235-9 to chase down 231-3) is still talked about by old men around winter firesides but that was a 40 over game.</p> <p>What followed was off the map. Granted there were a lot of extras (48 against 19 in The Gents' knock) and the fielding side only had ten men but what a pulsating, proud reply it was. Though Buck was bowled in the second over Caveney and Hibbert took the score to 70 in the seventh over before Kumar's first wicket did for Caveney. Hibbert powered to a returned fifty in just ten overs with six fours and a six. Desai matched him, the handsome Bollywood film star essaying some drives of the highest class, including four fours and two sixes, his first for the club. Possibly mulling over his image rights contract, he played over Dubey in the fourteenth over, Gents 147-3, 49 needed in six. </p> <p>Gilkes and Sanjay Patel carried on fighting the good fight as extras mounted. The run rate slowed a little against Sudhish and Kumar before the latter cleaned up Gilkes and Dhruv Patel with successive balls, respectively pouched in the deep and top edging a return catch. Gimlik fell first ball and Gents were 166-6, needing 31 off 17 balls. Seven runs came off the remainder of the over: At 173-6 off 18, with the required rate creeping up, Sanjay took his cue. The 19th. over, bowled by Onkar, saw him spectacularly take a two, three fours and a single, 188-6 off 19. Kumar had held himself back for the final over, but could not prevent The Gents from crossing the line. A wide, two scurried singles, a Sanjay four and a bye left Palmer on strike for the final ball with the scores level, the tall, elegant batsman driving over mid-wicket for four to win the game at half past seven.</p> <p>Well done to those Gents who washed up and cleaned and tidied the pavilion. The day was a success with the two sides well-matched and several Gents batsmen now approaching some good batting form. Thanks also to Sachin for bringing along a likeable guest, whom we shall see again and of course to Sumit Kumar and his team.</p> </h5> </td> <td width="5%" /> </tr> </table> <br /> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="46" height="18">&nbsp;</td> <td width="751" height="18"> <!-- FOOTER --> <table style="border-collapse: collapse;" id="AutoNumber2" bordercolor="#111111" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="100%" border="0"> <tbody> <tr> <td width="100%"> <table style="border-collapse: collapse;" id="AutoNumber4" bordercolor="#111111" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="3" width="100%" border="0"> <tbody> <tr> <td width="100%"> <hr width="80%" color="#6699cc"> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="100%"> <p align="center"> <span> <font face="Verdana" size="2"><a href="#top">Back to top</a></font> </span> </p> </td> </tr> </tbody> </table> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="100%"> <table style="border-collapse: collapse;" id="AutoNumber3" bordercolor="#111111" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="5" width="100%" border="0"> <tbody> <tr> <td align="center" width="20%"><font face="Verdana" size="2"><a href="../Home.htm"><span>Home</span></a></font></td> <td align="center" width="20%"><font face="Verdana" size="2"><a href="../News.htm"><span>News</span></a></font></td> <td align="center" width="20%"><font face="Verdana" size="2"><a href="../Results.htm"><span>Results</span></a></font></td> <td align="center" width="20%"><font face="Verdana" size="2"><a href="../Archives.htm"><span>Archives</span></a></font></td> <td align="center" width="20%"><font face="Verdana" size="2"><a href="../Forum.htm"><span>Forum</span></a></font></td></tr></tbody></table></td></tr> <tr> <td width="100%"> <p align="center">&nbsp;</p> <p align="center"><font face="Verdana" size="2">©The Gentlemen of West London Cricket Club 2010</font></p> <p align="center">&nbsp;</p> </td> </tr> </tbody> </table> </td> </tr> </tbody> </table> </body> </html>
